About Lake Charles & Southwest Louisiana

The Lake Charles/Sulphur area is located in Southwest Louisiana midway between New Orleans and Houston. The area ranges from farm and marshland with abundant wildlife to busy city landscape. Southwest Louisiana also encompasses a vast petroleum and petrochemical industry.  The Port of Lake Charles is one of the largest inland ports in the nation and the largest rice exporting port in the United States.

Lake Charles is home to McNeese State University, a fully accredited four year university and Sowela Tech, the largest technical school in the state.  The area is developing into a medical center with 7 hospitals, over 200 practicing physicians and more then 100 dentists.

The climate is humid subtropical with a storm maritime character.  Annual rainfall totals more than 50 inches.  The winter months are mild with cold spells of short duration and the summer months are consistently quite humid and warm.

Southwest Louisiana is multicultural - Cajun, Italian, Irish, German, and Indian, just to name a few. It is also known for its excellent variety of foods.  It's gaming and the great outdoors, culinary delights, rhythm and blues that make Louisiana exciting.  It's good company and quite reflections, historical sites and luxurious accommodations.  It is a tropical climate and Southern hospitality.  From Lake Charles to New Orleans, there is never a month without its share of unique festivals. Lake Charles has that big city flair without being a "big city".  Southwest Louisiana - a fun place to visit - a great place to live!
